Earn your scuba certification today and open your life to a new world of adventure and discovery!
The Open Water Diver Course is designed to prepare students for safe open water scuba diving. The Open Water Diver course is broken into two parts. The first part is pool and classroom training and the second part is open water training, where you will go to a lake or ocean with an instructor and complete your skills in an "open water" environment. All students receiving certification will possess the knowledge, skills, and habits necessary for safe open water scuba diving with a buddy, independent of an instructor or divemaster.
Pool & Classroom Training This part of the training is normally done on the weekends: Friday night, Saturday & Sunday. The exact start & finish times will vary depending on the pool schedule, but normally Friday night will run from 6:00-10:30p.m. and Saturday & Sunday will be from about 8:30a.m. until about 5:00p.m. The total number of hours that you will spend under the personal guidance of an instructor is over 20 hours during your pool & classroom training. Additional pool or classroom sessions are available if students need or want extra time to practice their skills.
On-Line Option There is a new "on-line" option available for completing most of the classroom part of the training which is ideal for students with busy schedules or who reside outside of Edmonton. Students complete the theory at home on their own schedule and will be required to attend a 1-2 hour classroom session that covers registration & orientation, gear set-up, and any necessary theory review. Students will complete the pool training either with a regularly scheduled class or on a private one-on-one basis. For more information, go to www.sdi-onlinetraining.com/.
Open Water Training Upon completion of the pool & classroom training, a minimum of 1 snorkel dive and 4 open water dives in a lake or ocean (with the instructor) are required for students to be comfortable and to satisfactorily demonstrate all necessary skills for certification. Upon completion of each open water dive, both the student and instructor should feel comfortable with the training exercises completed.
Many different options are available when choosing a location to complete your open water training. You may complete your training dives with us in Jasper during the summer months or in Nanaimo (Vancouver Island) all year round. If you're planning on traveling internationally, you can also complete your dives at your holiday destination. We will help you set up your dives with a dive shop at your hotel or close by. Students must keep in mind that this part of the training is still part of the certification course, and therefore your four required dives must be completed with the same instructor. A drysuit may be used instead of a wetsuit during open water training (with additional training and fees prior to the open water training). See Drysuit Diver for more info.
Prerequisites for the Open Water Course:
- Minimum age for certification is 15 years
- Junior Scuba Diver available for ages 12 to 15 but must be accompanied by an adult during the course
- Physically fit and able to handle the physical and psychological demands of scuba diving independent of an instructor

Single Student: $175 per person plus GST
Costs include one snorkel dive and four open water scuba dives with an instructor (Jasper or local Alberta lake). All scuba equipment is provided including snorkeling gear. Not included in the cost are the required airfills after diving on Saturday in order to complete the Sunday dives. At the store in Edmonton, an airfill is $7 per tank, in Jasper at the firehall it is $10 per tank.
Upon registration for the open water portion of the training, students should come to the store to get fitted for their wetsuit, hood, gloves, and BCD. The sooner you reserve your sizes, the less likely you will be disappointed if your size is gone!
Students must keep in mind that they will be required to haul their dive gear to the dive site for the open water training. This will include two tanks each, a weight belt, and a rubbermade tote with their wetsuit & other scuba equipment. While it is not a lot of stuff to haul, please plan your transportation accordingly.
Please note: Costs for completion at an international location through the Referral program will be determined by the other instructor.
Complete your four required open water dives with a drysuit for an extra $100, which includes a manadatory extra pool session. Upon successful completion, you will receive your Drysuit Specialty Certification.

Referral Program Want to finish your required open water dives internationally? Upon completion of your pool & classroom training, you will be issued a Referral Letter. You will give this to your instructor at your vacation destination who will complete your required dives with you. After your that instructor signs off on your dives, you will bring the letter back to us and we will issue you your permanent certification card. Your international instructor should issue you a temporary card so that you may continue diving as a certified diving on your vacation. Costs for completing your open water dives will be set by the other dive shop or instructor.
Above and Beyond.... At The Dive Outfitters, we're not going to send you off with a referral letter in hopes that there will be an instructor available for a fair price at your vacation destination. We will do our best to help you locate an instructor or dive shop at your destination, confirm costs, and ensure that the instructor will be available during your visit to complete your open water dives. Please inform us as soon as possible of all the details of your trip so that if we don't already know of an instructor at your destination, we can try to locate one for you.
